Vigilance is a Christian humanitarian NGO based in the West African nation of Burkina Faso that works to fight the pandemic of HIV/AIDS. The organization's primary objective is to limit new transmissions by informing the population about the dangers of the disease, teaching life skills to reduce risk factors, and working to eliminate the historical stigmatization related to HIV/AIDS. They provide medical care for the general population, primarily those infected or affected by the disease, and palliative care for the dying.

The mission of Vigilance is to bring those infected and affected by AIDS out of the darkness and into the light. HIV related stigma and discrimination remains an enormous barrier to the fight against AIDS. Fear of discrimination often prevents people from getting tested, seeking treatment, and admitting their HIV status publicly. Vigilance strives to provide the education needed to combat the fear and prejudice that lies at the core of HIV/AIDS discrimination. Vigilance promotes HIV awareness, tolerance, and compassion through Christian based teaching.

In the fall of 2008, Share The Well was introduced to Nikiema Kouliga Michel, the founder of Vigilance who had traveled to the United States to take English classes at Arizona State University. Kouliga is an inspirational man who has devoted his life to helping others. He embodies everything that Share The Well hopes to inspire in people. An immediate need was identified and through the talents and generosity of a computer programmer and a graphics designer Bob Laudner, a new website for Vigilance was created and can be seen at vigilanceonline.org.

Moving forward, Share The Well will continue in their commitment to supporting Vigilance in their fight against HIV/AIDS. We have agreed to assist in raising the necessary funds to build a much needed medical and educational center in Burkina Faso. A partnership has been established with Project Cure www.projectcure.org to provide the medical supplies for the facility on an annual basis.

We are in the process of establishing a network of support for Vigilance, and ask you to please consider joining the cause. Together we can make a difference in the lives of people infected and affected by AIDS. There are a number of ways to get involved with this important project, from fundraising to construction.
